Its the Little things, that make a big difference.

A Little Info About..... Cochlear Implants
If you’re not getting much benefit from a hearing aid, then often our next step is a cochlear implant. A cochlear implant is a special device which bypasses the damaged cells in your inner ear, and zaps the next cells up the chain. Don’t worry, those zaps are only one millionth of a volt, but that’s all your nerve needs to get the message up to your brain.
To find out if you could benefit from cochlear implants, we do a few special hearing tests through the headphones and with your hearing aids. We can then let you know how likely it is that you’ll hear better with cochlear implants. You might be a candidate for an implant just in one ear, or in both. We can help you understand the likely benefits, and get you onto one of our local Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists to find out if you’re medically suitable for the procedure.
Getting one or two cochlear implants involves a surgical procedure, and like any surgery we want to make sure it is necessary and is likely to give you the outcome you’re looking for.
If you found this web page, you’re not too old for a cochlear implant. We’ve seen plenty of clients in their 90s get great results with cochlear implants, and internationally there have been lots of recipients over 100 years old. Your surgeon will make sure you’re medically fit for surgery and discuss any risks with you.
Australia has some great funding available for cochlear implants. If you have private health insurance your typical out of pocket costs will be similar to a mid to high end private hearing aid in the year you get the implant. For people with concession cards there are also discounts available. In your subsequent year, the costs are significantly less.
